I went down to Greenville, NC (or as the locals call it, G-Vegas) to shoot the football game between Norfolk State and East Carolina. Opening game of the year for the Pirates. The Spartans had lost a close one the week before against Florida A&M in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta.
It was a pretty warm day with highs close to 90°F at kickoff. I entered the gates around 4:45pm for the 6pm kickoff. I wanted to get some shots of the players warming up.
The band took the field around 5:45pm and did their thing and the crowd watched the ECU “Purple Haze” intro. It is one of the cooler introductions in college football. We were finally ready for some football!
The game turned out to be pretty one-sided. East Carolina dominated and won 42-3, even with 6 turnovers. Their defense held Norfolk State to 114 total yards of offense and 7 total first downs. They had over 500 yards of offense and would have scored a lot more, if not for the 6 turnovers.
Norfolk State’s next game is at home on September 7th against Virginia State. East Carolina travels to Old Dominion University on September 7th to take on the Monarchs.
