Nikon FM2 with Ilford HP5+

Roll 15

City Streets, Quiet Trails, and Wild Marshes with the Nikon FM2n

This roll carried me through a mix of urban scenes, quiet parks, and wild marshland—an excellent showcase for what black-and-white film can reveal in such different environments. Shot entirely on my Nikon FM2n with Ilford HP5+, these images reflect a season of exploration between August 1, 2024 and November 3, 2024.

HP5+ is one of my favorite black-and-white stocks. Its slightly more pronounced grain and high latitude give it a grit that feels at home in both city streets and natural landscapes. It rewards careful metering but also forgives a lot, making it a perfect companion for wandering with the FM2n.

Town Center – Virginia Beach, Virginia

This roll begins in Town Center, where modern buildings and busy streets meet harsh light and deep shadows. HP5+ handled the contrast beautifully, letting the sharp edges of glass and steel pop against softer tones in the sky. There’s an immediacy to these frames that mirrors the energy of the area, but the monochrome palette also strips the scenes back to form and shape, emphasizing composition over color. Downtown Norfolk, Virginia

From there, I moved through downtown Norfolk, where the film’s classic look really shines. HP5+ has just the right amount of grain for city scenes—it adds texture to brick and pavement without overwhelming fine detail. The Nikon FM2n, with its mechanical precision, paired perfectly with HP5+ to render crisp highlights while still holding onto shadow detail in the alleys and side streets. These are the kinds of environments where black-and-white thrives. Fort Norfolk

Oak Grove Park – Chesapeake, Virginia

As with many of my rolls, I returned to Oak Grove Park. The familiar trails and reflective lake provided a strong contrast to the urban shots. Where HP5+ brought grit to the city, here it softened into moody midtones and gentle gradations of light through the trees. It’s a reminder of how versatile this film can be, adapting seamlessly to shifting subject matter. Oak Grove Park

Closing Thoughts

This roll of Ilford HP5+ reminded me once again why it’s such a beloved stock. From city streets to quiet trails and coastal marshland, it delivered consistent results while giving each environment its own distinct mood. Paired with the Nikon FM2n, it felt like the perfect balance of control and spontaneity.
